Ever felt like this?
Do you
worry about money? Do you often think that what you have
is not enough, or wish to have more? Have you ever felt you
had all the money you needed? Or do you constantly see
things that could be possible if you just had a little (or a
lot) more money?
Most people have an awkward and counterproductive
relationship with money. Most people look at money and see
struggle and despair, they see a resource that is depleted
constantly and that must be replenished by non-stop labour.
Work is then a hardship that must be endured to be able not
only to enjoy life, but to live at all. Money is not a tool,
but a limitation;
money is the quantifiable variable that indicates all the
things that you can't do or have, and a measurement of your
foreseeable suffering. Whether in large or relatively small
quantities, money is transformed in our minds into a
sentient and elusive creature that brings only different
measures of sorrow rather than various amounts of pleasure.
Think Value
A much more productive way to deal with money is to think about it in terms of value. This point of view looks to get away from the negative idea that "I never have enough money to get what I want" and move towards one along the lines of "What can this money do for me now?" Perhaps you found out that the money you now have can't buy you that holiday package to go and learn German in Germany, or maybe you are aching over making that trip to the United Kingdom to finally study English in England, even though you've been thinking about it for two years now. We often worry about all the things we can't buy and when we finally can, we worry about spending all that money!
Remember that money, in itself, is
worthless. The only value money has to it is the potential to become
something that improves
your quality of your life or the quality of the lives of the ones you
love. Whenever you are dealing with money, large or small quantities of
it, think about it in these terms: How can I put this to work to add
value to my life and to get me closer to my goals and dreams?
Get to Work
If you already have the means to do something you have always wanted to do or that will be greatly beneficial to you, don't worry about spending the money! We will always choose one among many options in our lives even if we were millionaires so just make sure to choose the one that will be great for you. On the other hand, maybe you don't have enough money to study Spanish abroad yet, but you can surely pick up a language book and start getting your feet wet. When you finally make that trip you've been dreaming about you'll be miles ahead and will be able to capitalize on the experience much better. Even if you are broke there are always things you can do to get started: ask family and friends for information, borrow books, talk to natives or people who know your target language to get a feel for it, go to the library and surf the Internet. Remember, there is no charge for using your brain and it's the most valuable tool you will ever be able to find.
Final Words
Money should add value to our lives, not burden us with feelings of inadequacy and frustration. Traveling, learning new skills, improving our health or our fitness and even entertainment; all of these are perfectly good ways to put your money to good use. You can start walking down the road to your goals right now, with the tools you have at hand. Make use of the money and don't let money use you instead!
